The Water Boys

It looks like the city is considering selling the water authority.

Again.

Yeah, they thought about selling it back in 2004ish, but there was more
drama than Ronnie and Sammi Sweetheart had on Jersey Shore
a couple seasons ago.

Ugh.

Thank goodness they don't focus on them any longer.

So yeah, back to our water...

The Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County sent of a
purchase proposal for our local watering hole.

The mayor thinks it's a good idea to talk to city council as well
as water board members.

We agree.

This is a big deal, that would affect many households throughout
the valley.

New Ken, Arnold, Lower Burrell, Upper Burrell, Allegheny Twp,
Washington Twp and Plum.

All of those areas are serviced by the New Kensington Water
Authority.

Last time the NKWA appraised, it came in around $31 million.

Some think it will be closer to $35 million or more this time around.

When we get more details about the offer.

We'll let you know about 'em.

We're Over It

This winter has been rather tame.

Sure we got some snow here and there (yesterday).

But we are ready for the weather to break.

Each year, when Valentine's Day approaches, we start dreaming
of warmer weather, and all the great things we do with it.

Barbecuing.
Golfing.
Tailgating.
Disc Golf.
Swimming.
Fishing.
Drinking Cold Beer in a Tank-Top.
etc...

As we sit here watching coverage of the PGA Pro-Am at Pebble Beach,
we feel the itch to get out and "pound some rocks" on the range.

It's been too long since we sported a pair of khakis, and placed a few wagers
on a round of golf.

Is there a better way to spend a sunny day than draining a 20 footer
under pressure, and extending your hand to retrieve a few bucks
from your duffing buddy?
We think not.

But for now, since grass around here is covered with the white stuff.

We will tune in to coverage of Romo and Woods vs. Furyk and Rucker, and
hope that it tides us over until we can get out there ourselves.

Hmmm...

Maybe a theNewk.com Golf Outing is in order this year.

Welcome Home Troops

This past Saturday the Reservists of the 307th came home to a hero's welcome.

And it was well deserved.

A little over a year ago, these men and women left the area and served
in Afghanistan until the end of January.

Being escorted by many firetrucks and police cars...

They arrived at Valley High at 3:30pm to a near packed house.

Family, friends and everyday citizens were there cheering, holding
signs and waving flags.

We were not able to attend, but our friends that were there said
it was "something special."

We wish we could thank each and every service man/woman for their
sacrifices.

They truly are heroes.

Welcome home.

We've missed you.

We talk a lot about beer around here.

Usually we speak of delicious Ales, IPAs, Pilsners, Stouts, Lagers and how
many we tried to consume in one sitting.

Generally that number is rather impressive.

Speaking of which, here is a picture from Tuesday night (Beer Can
Appreciation Day) at the Blind Pig.

We made ourselves proud that night.

But the beer we are talking about today is an entirely different brew.

This is Birch Beer.
Similar to Root Beer.

Why the hell are we talking about Birch Beer?

Because, one of the top lines of Birch Beer in the world will be
produced right here in the Newk.

Local company Castle Co-Packers, LLC (Castle), will be the
newest production and supply partner for Boylan Bottling Company (Boylan).

These "super premium sodas" served in 12 ounce glass bottles are
quite popular, and demand along the East Coast is growing.

We consider this big news around here.

And we assume the local paper will pick up on this sometime soon.

Maybe after they read about it here?

Big Brother is coming.

No, not our favorite reality show.

We are talking about the eyes in the sky.

Bids are being submitted to install a wireless 29-camera surveillance
system, from Tarentum to Sharpsburg.

The DA received nearly $300,000 for this system, from a few different
agencies.

One being the Department of Homeland Security.

These will be installed on a bunch of bridges heading down the
Allegheny.

Some of them being:

62nd Street
Highland Park
Hulton (pfffftt)

As well as our own Tarentum Bridge and Ninth St. bridge.
(Cameras on both sides of both bridges)

Some big intersections (Fox Chapel being one of them) will
also get some camera action.

And all over route 28.

We think this is a good idea.

This technology was used to help capture the guy that raped those
women in Ross Township.

Some of these cameras will be able to zoom in on license plates.
(Tarentum Bridge)

Police will be able to access these via laptop, due to the web-access
these things offer.

So make sure you are all glammed-up by Fall, because that is
the planned time frame to be up and running.

We Are Down With Dad

We spoke briefly to the 2 guys behind Pittsburgh Dad, and told
them we'd share a couple of our favorite "episodes."

Pittsburgh Dad is a series of youtube videos that seem to remind
most of us about our own father.

These guys did it as a way to make their own families laugh.

And now have over 1,000,000 views.

Not too shabby.

As fellow internet sensations, we feel a deep bond with Curt and Chris.

It isn't a day many of you were aware of.

Truthfully, we weren't aware of it all that long ago.

But, January 24th will forever hold a special place in the cockles
of our collective hearts (and bellies).

One new thing we've discovered is a great new social game.
No, not the Tour de Franzia.

This one is called "The Phone Stack."

It helps end one of the worst new social trends in the world.

No, not Fart Huffing.

It helps put an end to people constantly talking/typing/twittering
while at dinner or drinks with friends.

Here is how the game works.

Step 1: Everyone at the table orders.
2: All phones are stacked (face down) on the table.
3: First person to crack and check their phone is the loser.
4: The loser gets to pay the bill/tab.
5: If nobody cracks, everyone pays their own share as usual.

You could even do it at home with your family.

Loser does dishes?

Hell, just mentioning the game when out with people, might be
enough to get your point across?

Some increases aren't so bad.

But when we heard that boxes of our beloved Franzia will be taking

Once Again We Lead The Pack

A week ago, a reader of ours sent us an email and a link to
their video about the intersection at Taco Bell and BP.

To be honest, he sent the video a good while before last week,
but we had some end of the year things to post before 2012.

We posted it a week ago today.

The day after, we told you about a bad accident at that very intersection.

Then yesterday, we saw a piece on this on the 5 o'clock news on
channel 11.

Here are some top notch pictures we took from our couch...

At the end of the news story, they claimed more info will be available
in our local new paper on Tuesday.

Not only did we help break this story, we did it 7 days before
WPXI News, and the vnd.

This doesn't come as a surprise to us, as we've noticed many times
in the past that people scour our site for local news.

We aren't mad about it.

Hell, we are quite proud of it.

Now, it is very possible (or even likely), that the gentleman that sent
us the email also sent those news outlets the same email.

But the hits the video likely received the days following our post
may have had something to do with the others picking it up.

We Hate Being Right

This past Tuesday, we shared a video about the intersection
at Taco Bell/BP.

It showed people running the light there, after it had well
turned red.

Then yesterday, we got a text saying someone got T-boned
at that very intersection.

It was around 4:30pm or so when it happened.

So it really made rush hour even worse.

We were heading that way near 5pm, but turned off before we had
to deal with what looked like terrible traffic.

But we tried to snap a picture.

Here is our attempt.

Not great.

But it'll do.

We seriously hope everyone involved is okay.

New Year, Old Issue

As some of you may remember, we have a huge issue with the
traffic light at the corner of Fifth Ave/9th St.

It is insane that there isn't a stop sign there instead.

But that is not what this post is about.

This is about another intersection in the Newk.

We left the s out.
It said "interection."
We almost left it, as we are quite amused by that sort of stuff.

We got an email a week or so ago.

Would you be so kind in posting this on the facebook page? I am trying to spread the word and raise awareness...

We watched the video, and even though one of those cars may
have been us, we agreed to post this.

Now, we know that this type of behavior happens at many large
intersections, especially when people are trying to get to work.

But if calling attention to this ends up stopping a potential tragedy
in this town, we are all for it.

This is a common question, that we have a simple answer to.

It's because we are proud of where we are from, and grew tired
of people (even it's own citizens) talking bad about it.

Some residents would lower their heads when asked where they
are from.

That does not make us happy.

So we decided to try and change the mindset of our fellow Newkers.

We have a lot to be proud of, but nobody seemed to be pointing
those things out.

So here we are.

Like us or hate us, we decided to try and change how this town/area
is perceived by the masses.

And we don't plan on stopping any time soon.

We Read It On The Twitter

I first heard of the death of Osama bin Laden as I
laid down to sleep on Sunday night around 11pm.

I noticed the twitter feeds were blowing up, even
more than usual.

People were talking about the president planning a late
evening speech, and the buzz was that of a possible big
announcement that we finally got to Osama.

Now, for most of that evening, I was watching the Phillies
take on the Mets in Philadelphia.

What I ended up missing was amazing...

Unreal stuff right there.

That would have been my preferred memory of this moment.

But I have Twitter.

So be it.

This morning I felt better than I had in a long time.

The drive to work is a blur.

My American Flag lapel pin shined like a new penny.

It was going to be a great day.

A day I would never forget.

And there aren't many of those types of days during a lifetime, and
I was looking forward to this one.

That was until I started reading about possible conspiracy
theories, and how people think they were being lied to.

This upset me greatly.

This is a time for our country to pull together and stand united.

But it felt more divided than usual.

I thought about going on a one man crusade to try and change the
minds of everyone that thought/felt differently than I did.

But that's not my job.

I actually feel as though I am going outside of my comfort zone, just
writing this much on the website that I contribute to.

So, before I do more harm than good, I will wrap this up.

I want to thank everyone involved in this successful mission.

I support our troops, and believe it when they say they got
their man.

The world is a better place today, and I am thankful to all involved.

USA! USA! USA!

Speaking of wrapping things up...

I think I'll buy some stock in Reynolds Wrap, as I can
just hear all the foil hats being made around me.

to the Packers.

It's not a memory we enjoy reliving.

But it was a seriously good post.

Super Bowl Wasn't So Super

So, just like most of you, we watched the Super Bowl
this past Sunday night.

Ours hopes for another championship were as high
as an eagle's ass.

We got together, shared beers and tons of yummy morsels.

We cheered.
We laughed.
We high-fived.
We ate.
We yelled at a pet bird that kept on chirping.

It was your quintessential Super Bowl party.

The only thing that was missing was a victory for our
beloved Steelers.

But we lost.

So be it.

We are a proud group, we Steeler fans.

No doubt, victory would have been celebrated with great
ferocity and complete joy.

But we lost.

So be it.

We lost with class.

We wouldn't trade these last two weeks for anything.

It was like the holidays all over again around here.

People smiled a little easier.

We shared a common goal.

And for that, we are thankful.

So, without further ado, here is our take on the Super Bowl.

It started out with a Pittsburgh native effing up our
national anthem.

(The majority of us here would likely still schtoop her, if given
the chance.)

We then got scored on a bunch, and things looked bleak.

Then the Black Eyed Peas to the stage at halftime, and
things got even bleaker.

Ugh.

If you didn't already know, we loathe the Black Eyed Peas.

They stunk up the stage.

They only thing that could have saved the performance, would
have been a wardrobe malfunction, where the Chavez one
tore the breastplate off that Fergie dude.

We could seriously go on for days, but we'll spare you.

Until next week, when we're sure they'll do another performance
for something, cause they don't seem to turn down any gig
where they can make a buck, and dress like a-holes.

If Roger Goodell wasn't such a hardon, he would have booked
our man Keenan Cahill to rock the joint.

Editor's Note:

The Steelers started to play better.

We started getting our hopes up.

Then the best commercial of the night hit...

Our lives were changed forever.

That kid is epic.

So the game continued, and the Miller Lites kept on flowing.

We came close to having the biggest comeback victory in SB
history, but we all know it wasn't meant to be.

The game ended.

We packed up some leftovers.

Then went home, and swore off Sportscenter for at least
the next 8 days.

Even karaoke couldn't take away the pain we were
going through.

All in all, a memorable night with friends.

Nothing like your team being in the Super Bowl.

We'll take it every year.

Smoke On The Water, Fire In The Sky

So the last couple days, we've showed a picture

and a video about the mystery flame that is
terrorizing the imaginations of many a Newker.

We've received a few emails, photos, and have been reading
all about it on the facebook.

Here are some shots of it.

And the best of the bunch.

Here are some of the theories going around...

- The Olympics are being held in Fawn.
- It's a Jimi Hendrix tribute.
- A monument made for us, cause we beat Fire and Flames
on the hard setting playing Guitar Hero.

- S'mores Station

Those are all great theories.

And we would believe any one of them, if we didn't
actually know the truth.

The fact is, it's a natural gas well flare.

It's a controlled burn used to release pressure and test the
volume of gas in the well.

And it can be seen for miles, and sounds like a freight
train when you're right up on it.

You can actually see the flame from the top of
Drey St.

And while on Drey, head on down the hill to see this
little beauty...

So anyways.

It's probably gonna be burning for a couple weeks, so you
can all just chill out.

There is one thing we'd like to ask the fine folks at the
Marcellus Shale Mine...

When the time has come to extinguish this beast of a
flame, we were hoping you'd allow us to snuff it out,
voted off the island Survivor style?

Flame Off

We have it on good authority that the Pittsburgh Mills
Mystery Flame has been put out.

It was just yesterday that we explained to our 13 readers
what the heck that thing was.

Now, it's gone.

All we have are the glowing memories embedded deep
inside of our imaginative brains.

So to honor this fleeting light.

We would like to recognize some of our other

What a week, huh?

We are not sure what we did to get such an awesome early
Christmas gift, but we are for sure gonna accept it.

Jimbo and the Soupbones are playing a 21 and over show tonight
at the Blind Pig (diagonal from the Valley track).

The show is gonna get underway around 9pm, and as always,
is gonna be a party atmosphere not to be missed.

We were just talking to Jimbo the other night, and he can't wait
to play you all away...

You really need to come out and have what is sure to be a
fantastic evening at one of the best local spots for music.

The Pig has opened up the entire second floor, featuring a overlook
right down on the staging area.

Two full service bars, a top notch kitchen, and great music awaits.

So put on your best Christmas sweater, and get there early.

Because if they rock this place like they rocked Consol Energy Center
last February, you don't want to miss this.

Take Your Best Shot

The shot heard 'round Upper Burrell.

A few days ago, an Upper Burrell family had a frightening
realization.

When putting their son to bed, they noticed broken drywall and
stuff all over the floor.

This was very strange.

But what is even stranger yet, is the fact that they found a
bullet hole in the wall mere feet from where their son lays
his head down to sleep at night.

Turns out, an errand shot from a local hunter seems to have pierced
the wall of the child's bedroom, and left quite a bit of damage.

The state game commission doesn't have any leads yet, but the
continue to interview known hunters in that area.

We here at theNewk hope that the culprit is found, and forced to
take some shooting lessons, as well as eye tests.

He must have thought that house was a state record buck.

Shop Till You Drop

We do a ton of our Christmas shopping online.

It really makes things much easier.

But honestly, there is nothing like getting out there and rubbing
elbows with your fellow holiday shoppers.

Just ask our main-man, J-Dub.

He went out to get some goods just the other day.

His journey was such a pleasurable one, he asked a passerby
to take a moment from her gift-finding, and take a picture of
him and his cart.

And what a cart it was...

There really is something special about getting out there and
shopping until you drop.

Especially when you are as handsome as J-Dub, and all the checkout
girls give you a little wink, as well as your change.

The even is called Crafts with Santa.

It happens tomorrow at 2pm and ends at 4:30pm.
The EKCC (across from Martin Elementary) is hosting this thing.

All for only $5 a child.

A great event, that supports a great group of ladies.

A little while back, we heard that the city was considering putting
the Public Works building up for sale.

You know, the big building across from Valley High that has the clock
that doesn't work.

Yep, that's the one.

Turns out, the building isn't what the city needs these days.

The two-story design isn't very efficient.

And there is a ton of land to go with it.

Just about 7 acres.

So the city will begin accepting proposals for the building and the land.

At which point, the city will build a nice one-story works building.

It almost sounds too easy.

And we hope it will be.

We also hope something cool will move into the current location.

Maybe the new Newk offices?

How about it, Mr. Mayor?

The Streets Were Packed

This past Saturday was the New Kensington Christmas Parade.

And it was a huge success.

There were people everywhere.

Mostly wide-eyed children, waiting for bag loads
of candy to be thrown their way.

We've done this parade for the last 3 years, and have attended countless
parades previous to this one.

And we were blown away.

Not only by the huge crowds, but by the number of people that
yelled things at us, such as...

"I follow you guys on Twitter!"
"Can I have your golf cart?"
"We love your site!"
"Where is Frank the Stank?"
"Keep up the great work!"
"Hey pal, your fly is open."

We would like to thank all of you that expressed your support our way.

Also, the hundreds, if not thousands, of smiling people that brought
so much holiday spirit to our fine town.

It was a shining moment.

And we were once again proud to be from New Kensington.

To the folks that put everything together this year, including the mayor,
the coordinators, the police, fire departments, and all the participants.

Thank you!

4th and 5th Avenue

Santa's Workshop at the Alle-Kiski Senior Center
on 3rd Avenue following the parade with games, prizes,
balloons, free books, crafts and of course the jolly
ol' man himself, SANTA CLAUS!!!!

And of course, just like the last couple years, we will be taking
part in the festivities.

We will once again have a very special guest with us.

So get your cameras ready.

Its going to be a great time, as usual.

And get your hands ready...

Because our candy throwing arms have never felt stronger.

Just Waking Up

We've expressed to you on many occasions, how big a fans
we are of the Thanksgiving holiday.

It truly is an amazing day to be alive.

And we had a great one this year.

Food.
Family.
Food.
Whiskey.
Pie.
Football.

Now, being children of divorce really doesn't have many
well regarded aspects.

But the chance to eat multiple T-Day dinners makes those years
of the unknown almost seem worth it.

That's not true at all.

Divorce sucks.

Some things are just not meant to be, and we are now able to
understand that.

But anyways, back to gravy...

So we made our rounds (3 stops actually).

We saw many happy faces.

We tasted many delicious things.

We came home rather loaded.

Which explains the lack of post on Black Friday.

Speaking of Black Friday, we got a couple awesome deals.

Not the 42" Sharp TV at Best Buy, but some decent deals
nonetheless.

We would have camped out for that TV, but we only camp out
for concerts and nudist events.

Both of which are summertime things.

We are happy that the holidays are here.

We dig this time of year.

People smile more.
Folks are nicer to each other.
And people buy us stuff.

We aren't big fans of Annie, but damn it, we love Thanksgiving.

And tomorrow is the big day.

We considered talking about the 007-style oil spill on the turnpike.

We also thought about how tonight is the biggest party night (with
people you didn't talk to in high school) of the year.

And that bars like Gunny's, Joe's Place and many others will be
packed with old friends, and various letterman jackets.

But this night is bigger than all of us.

It's about family time.
It's about reflecting on stuff that makes life worth living.
It's about drunk aunts, and pervy uncles.
It's about annoying cousins.
It's about watching your grandfather make a dead turkey
do a "turkey-fly" around the house until it's time to cook that SOB.
It's about sales at department stores.
But most of all, it's about gravy.

Glorious gravy.

It's the nectar of the gods.

Thanksgiving just wouldn't be the same without it.

Well, maybe it would?

It would just be a lot dryer, and much less flavorful.

It's been the longest 320 days of our lives.

Waiting for this thoroughbred of a man's brain to heal up, so
he could come back and make our man-parts tingle.

Honestly, we have the biggest man-crush on #87.

He is a beast.

His 2 goals and 2 assists last night, surprised no one.

He is far and away the best hockey player on the planet.

You can disagree.

But you'd be stupid to try.

A while back, Brackenridge Heights Country Club
was foreclosed on by the bank for delinquent payments and
taxes, nearing 1 million dollars.

It has been for sale ever since.

People wanted to buy it and turn it into a housing plan.

Just what we need... another cookie-cutter housing plan.

But those deals all fell through.

And out of nowhere, comes a knight in shining armor.

Okay, maybe not a knight, but he likely has some armor at
his scrap metal business.

Ted Tomson, owner of Tomson Scrap Metal,
likely paid cash for the place.

Cause that dude is crazy loaded.

He says he plans on opening up the 9 hole course for public play.

He is not sure what else he's gonna do with the place.

But we have some ideas:

Okay, we only had one idea.

But damn if it wasn't an awesome one.

We sometimes wonder what it was actually like at the first ever Thanksgiving.

Did they really wear those terrible hats?
Did they earn a bunch of fuel perks when they bought the turkey and like 500 cans of corn?
Was gravy super fattening (and extra delicious)?
Did they root for the Detroit Lions?
Did they use Redi-Whip or Cool Whip on their pumpkin pie?

An accident early yesterday morning in Natrona Heights
claimed the lives of two young ladies.

From the sounds of things, they were heading back from
Walmart.

When the bad storm likely contributed to them crossing over
the center line and running into a trailer in front of Ron Gillette Inc.

They likely died on contact, but weren't discovered until people were
heading to work the next morning.

Our thoughts go out to the families of these women.

May they find peace.

Godspeed, Beth and Samantha.

As soon as we are able to cope with one thing, something else seems

Light Em Up

This Friday is Light Up Night in Pittsburgh.

We like going down and seeing all the lights and people.

We usually make a pit stop when we first get there, for a traditional
fifth of brandy.

It's the one time a year we drink that stuff.

For some reason, it brings us much holiday cheer.

So anyways, there are a bunch of cool things scheduled over the
weekend.

We plan on trying to take in as many as we can.

As many of you veteran readers already know...

We LOVE Christmas!

This is seriously the best time of year.

Shootin They Faces Off

We aren't sure what it is about video games that make people
decide to email us, but we're cool with it.

Some folks told us to grow up.
Some wanted to play along side of us.
Some were just trying to get a booty call.

But no matter what they said, none of it compared to the

On The Front Line

As we left the gym last night...

(Don't be too impressed. We just go there to sit on the
yoga ball and bounce around while squealing weeeeee!!!!)

we noticed a large group of acne ridden teens sitting in front of
the Game Stop in Lower Burrell, slugging Monster Energy drinks and
texting each other.

It didn't take us long to realize why they were there.

No, they weren't giving away free Bagel Bites.

They were lining up for the midnight release of MW3.
(Modern Warfare 3)

It's a first-person shooter video game for all the different gaming
consoles.

(As if there are any other than the PS3)

It is said to be the most awaited video game ever.

And to tell you the truth, we can't wait to get our grubby little
mitts on this thing.

There may even be a day or two where we pull an all-nighter and
forget to post something on here.

We apologize early for this.

And if you plan on fragging dudes on the PS3, keep and eye out
for the VV crew.

We are always looking for some bright new talent.

We don't really care if you are good at the game.

You just need to be able to sling mad smack talk.

This weekend, we have huge plans.

We plan on setting our clocks back.

Like right now if we could.

It's totally our favorite time of year.

Something about getting that extra hour of sleep brings a rather
large smile to our collective faces.

We hit the snooze button like a fat kid eats ice cream...

With speed and tremendous accuracy.

That extra hour really gets us in the holiday spirit.

We may even celebrate Saturday night with a 30 pack of Busch Light
and a Clucker pizza from Stella's.

Drop It On The One

A little over a year ago, we told you about some d-bag that
burned down the restrooms at Memorial Park.

We then told you about the city's plan for new dumpers.

It turns out that the bids were a good bit higher than the
insurance company was giving the city.

And the city isn't willing to kick the extra cheddar.

So they started looking at other options.

Turns out, there are some pretty decent pre-fab concrete water
closets out there.

And they come in well under the insurance payout.

So the city is gonna use the extra greenbacks to erect a new
pavilion (which also got burned down by the b-holes).

Being that the park is closed for the winter, hopes are that the
new structures will be raised by spring.

We can't wait to give the new loo a go.

C'mon, Spring!

Holy doodie!

It's November already.

This is just crazy.

In a few short weeks, we will be sitting down with family and
friends for Thanksgiving dinner.
(Our favorite meal ever.)

And from that point on, the Christmas season will be full
steam ahead.

This may be one of the last days this year that doesn't feel like
a blur.

Although some folks we know are already finished Christmas shopping.

Seriously?

We like waiting until Black Friday to start our shopping.

This weekend is a great time to dust off that old costume, and
hit some local spots that are throwing parties.

From what we've heard,Friday night DJ Frankie will be at the
Do Drop Inn in the Heights. Prizes for costumes and stuff will be given.

Saturday:
The Blind Pig has live music and prizes and food.
Ziggy's in Tarentum has DJ Frankie and contests.
Stella's will have delicious food and good times as always.
House of 1000 Beers is having a party with top-notch beers being tapped
through the night, such as Dogfish Head 120 and Pumking!

Jonathon Lipnicki turned 21.

Yep, that Jonathon Lipnicki.

When we read that yesterday, we were stunned.

It was quite the reality check.

And we thought...

Damn, we are handsome.

Wait.

We are always thinking that.

It also made us think about getting old.

And while we were thinking that, we saw a picture of Jon now...

Obviously, Jonathon still hangs out with industry powerhouses
like the guy that never sings from the Black Eyed Peas.

We want to say happy birthday to Jonathon.

And thank him for teaching us that the human head weighs 8 pounds.

Last weekend, we told you about a friend of ours doing a
guest bartending gig to raise funds for a couple different
charities.

We don't know if we had anything to do with it, but the turnout
was amazing.

People packed Stella's, and the drinks were flowing like
Little Pucketa Creek after a heavy rainfall.

DJ Frankie was dropping jams like Lone Starr.

A sincere thanks to everyone that made this event possible.

And all the drinker friends we have.

We couldn't have done it without you, and your issues.

Laid To Rest

Yesterday, Officer Derek Kotecki was laid to rest in front
of hundreds of people (mostly fellow officers).

Over 50 K-9 units were also in attendance.

It was a very emotional day.

And the sorrow we all feel, won't be going anywhere anytime
soon.

Now, we usually don't borrow local photos, but this one made an
impact on us.

It's not often that we promote stuff that we are kinda
involved in.

To be honest, we are generally too lazy to actually get
involved in anything, so this is a pretty big occasion.

A friend of ours, let us call him Patrick, is guest bartending
at Stella's Restaurant near Eat N' Park tomorrow (Saturday).

He is having DJ Frankie rock some tunes, and is doing trivia, and
name that tune, and all kinds of other fun stuff.

Including prizes.

That's right, we said prizes, people.

But the best part about this event isn't the fact that we will likely
be in attendance...

Its the fact that he's donating proceeds (tips) to a couple different
Autism Foundations.

He really wasn't promoting this, as we would have said something sooner.

He wasn't sure if the charities would have an issue
being associated with an alcohol fueled event.

But after talking to many folks about it, he figured he'd say something in
hopes it may bring in one or two more customers.

Anyways, here are the deets...

Guest bartender hours are from 7pm to close.
Special drink prices 7-9.
Dj Frankie starting at 9ish.
Games and events throughout the night.
Prizes all night.
Food may even be involved.

Patrick may be a little on the raunchy side, so if you go, be prepared
to hear/witness a few blue comments.

In the end, you'll end up loving him like a brother.

Early reports last night claimed the Charlie Post ambushed
and killed a Lower Burrell police officer before turning the
gun on himself.

This is the same guy responsible for shooting up his boss' car at the
Clarion Hotel last week.

This is a senseless and tragic story.

Don't Hate The Player, Hate The Gator

That's exactly what the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County
was doing when they voted to allow a possible alligator (former pet)
to remain in the Beaver Run Reservoir until the cold
weather kills it.

Terrible.

Sure, Alligators can't cuddle with you.

Hell, They'd likely eat your face if given the chance.

But allowing one to just die for no good reason is an absolute shame.

So reps from the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium plan on setting some
sort of box trap, to try and catch the little bugger.

Okay, a 5 foot gator is not "little."

Either way, we totally agree with this new plan, and wish them the
best of luck.

And if in fact they do catch Tony (that's what we just named him), he
will spend some time at the PGH Zoo.

Makin' That Paper

TheNewk's finest have agreed on a new contract.

Yup, New Kensington police will get a 3% this year, and next.

We like to see people getting paid what they deserve.

Sadly, our last run in with a Newk officer left a little to be desired.

We understand they have a really tough gig.

Dealing with many of the locals that we know (and likely hang with),
can't be an easy job.

It also bothers us that we are allowing this one incident to cloud our
opinion of an entire group of folks.

But, he deserves it.

Anyways...

The starting salary of a new patrolman will jump from $41,100 now,
to $43, 600 by the end of the contract.

Not bad.

A full officer: $62,300 from 58,800.

And the big dogs will earn $65,500 (up from $61,800 last year.)

Some other changes are 2 sick days a month, rather than 2 1/2.

Also, officers can buy family health coverage at full cost to them.

By the sounds of things, both sides are really happy with how the
negotiations went.

There wasn't even a need for labor attorneys.

Which saved the city a pretty penny for sure.

What's New Pussycat?

Bad news (bears) coming out of the local animal shelter scene.

It seems a kitten may have the rabies infection.

This kitten was brought to the shelter a little while ago, after what
appeared to be an attack.

They think a raccoon may have gotten to her.

And we all know that those Newk raccoons are some scary bastards.

And it's likely this one had the rabies.

So anyways, a male volunteer went to clean out the living quarters
of the kitten, when he was bitten several times.

And from what we hear, rabies shots totally suck.

So we wish this noble citizen the best of luck.

Little known fact:

Raccoons bark.

Seriously, there was one on our porch one time, and it started barking
at us as we approached it.

He was a stubborn dude, and wouldn't allow us to pass.

Much like the black knight.

(It's just a flesh wound.)

Lucky for us, we decided to skip our lunchtime apple, so we had
something to chuck at him.

Not really thinking of the possibility that we were giving him even
more reason to be an angry squatter, by providing him a
delicious snack.

We threw the golden delicious much like we did when we pitched for
the Eagles in little league.

And just like then, our accuracy was much better in our head, than
it was on the field.

Luckily, the raccoon did not want to wait for us to throw ball 2, and
scurried his barking ass out of there.

Thank goodness we weren't prairie doggin' it that night, as it was
quite the intense standoff.

The Clarks Are Coming

Yup.

The Clarks are coming to the Newk.

That's right, kids.

The Pittsburgh based rock band is gonna melt faces at the
Penn Ken Fall Festival this Saturday.

(We aren't sure why the dude in red is standing like that, but whatevs.)

They aren't the only attraction, just the best (in our opinion).

Seriously though, no offense to the:
- Car Cruise from 11am - 2pm
- Bed Races from 11am - 3pm
- Ibeji Drum Ensemble will perform African Music in the upper lot @ 2pm
- Craft and Food Vendors all day in the upper lot (funnel cakes, haluski,
pulled pork, brisket and many other yummies)
- (band) Bishop Clay will take the stage at 4pm
- And The Clarks will rock out at 5

There are many other things to do there, so grab the kids and
head on up to Upper Burrell.

Everything, especially the Bed Races, are sure to be a great time.

We are sad that we didn't get a bed racing team together
for this year's festival. You can bet we'll be ready next year.
